The Argyle Diamond Mine
The Argyle Diamond Mine is the richest diamond deposit in the world. It is situated near Lake Argyle, a man-made dam at Smoke Creek in the remote north of Western Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine produces more than a third of the world's total annual supply of pink, champagne, and white diamonds. Brown diamonds are usually less expensive than any other colors due to the fact that they are less appealing to the majority of consumers. For many years people have been used to the brilliance of clear, white diamonds. The color descriptions of these diamonds are now described and marketed as Cognac or Champagne to increase their overall appeal.

Champagne Diamonds
What exactly are Champagne Diamonds? Champagne diamonds have a tint of brownish body color and the term champagne is an alternative way of describing brown diamonds.

Diamonds can occur in nearly any color, though yellow and brown are by far the most common. The Champagne diamond is a member of the Carbon family and is the hardest substance known. The word Diamond is derived from the Greek word "adamas" which means "hardest metal" reflecting the property of the stone.

Definition of Diamond Color
What is the Definition of a Champagne Diamond? Colored diamonds contain impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration. The most common impurity, nitrogen, causes a slight to intense yellow coloration depending upon the type and concentration of nitrogen present. Brown or Champagne “amber” diamond crystals show some deformation called “brown graining”. They also contain nitrogen.
